For 50 years, predicting a protein's 3D shape from its amino-acid sequence was an unsolved problem. In 2020, DeepMind's AlphaFold cracked it. In partnership with EMBL's European Bioinformatics Institute, they released predicted structures for nearly all catalogued proteins, over 200 million, free and open to the world. The database has been used by more than 3 million researchers across 190+ countries to accelerate drug discovery, disease research, and basic biology. AlphaFold was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
